The Collection is in the care of The MacDougall Trust, set up to look after it and 'display it for the benefit and education of the people of Lorn and indeed elsewhere'. This is no mean task, as it amounts to several thousand items from a matchbox up to an industrial loom.
On Miss MacDougall's death on the 23rd of December 1998, the Trust, under guidance of museum professionals, packed the Collection and moved it into store. The sheer scale of it has meant that it has remained there since, although vigorous efforts have been made to move matters forward.
It is not a good time to be developing new museums, no matter how valuable or wanted they are. Nationally, museums struggle financially and public agencies are wary of funding new ones. The Trust is therefore moving in a direction of care and education and making use of technology through ICT.
In WHEN ????? the Trust was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund to establish a 3-year project to document the Collection, and develop a programme of educational outreach to schools and other sectors of the community. The project ran from a newly developed store in the Oban area, and would enable access by appointment to artefacts, as well as through outreach.
