~ ANECDOTE OF THE MONTH ~

This item, like our other valuable objects, is currently in safe storage and not accessible at present, otherwise we would find a way of displaying it at this particularly apt time ….

    SCOTTISH COMMEMORATIVE JUBILEE GOBLET 1952 - 1977
The following is an extract from Miss MacDougall's inventory of the Collection, reproduced in her own layout:

'At the close of the Oban China Shop, 19 September 1979 - (formerly Livingstone's "Old Lang Syne China"), I had chosen as the last purchase from the shop, a small brown teapot. However Mr Malcolm Black, owner of the shop, and of the Black family who had the Tobacconist' shop next door, wrote 22nd February 1980:

    Dear Miss MacDougall,
Although I realise that you chose a brown teapot as the last purchase from the shop, I am not very keen to have the business marked by that as the only symbol in your collection considering all the beautiful pieces for which the shop was noted.
Therefore I would consider it a great favour if you would accept instead an item of which I am very proud.
It is the commemorative Goblet of the Queen's Silver Jubliee which I designed, and which was the only item bearing the Royal Arms as matriculated in Scotland for that occasion.
The Queen and the Queen Mother both graciously accepted one. Enclosed is a receipt which shows that this was the last item purchased from the China Shop.
I trust you will accept it with my compliments,
    Yours sincerely,
    Malcolm Black,
    91 George Street
    Oban, Argyll.

The goblet was made by Wedgewood.

some tales of what she got up to while collecting - it would be good to have a number of these to rotate through the year : we also need the images to illustrate them - like one of the goblet
